Fauquier High School in Warrenton, VA completed a renovation to the school in May of 2013. The renovation consisted of the replacement of an underperforming 1964 classroom building with a 4-story addition. The project contained 86,500-square-feet of new construction and 11,000-square-feet of renovation. Serving grades 9-12 with 45 new classrooms, the architect was committed to creating an active learning environment, inspiring health and movement. Sustainability and energy optimization were a hallmark of this $37-million facility with daylight harvesting & controlling, occupancy sensors, and a ground source heat pump system. Use of NeaCera high performance rainscreens were chosen to balance innovation and heritage, inspired by historic terra-cotta silos. The architects chose Burnt Red panels in the Flat Classic & Grooved shapes to add texture and create shading effects on the façade. The Virginia School Board Association awarded Fauquier the 2014 Gold Design Award, and the Virginia Chapter of the Council of Educational Facility Planners International and Virginia Department of Education awarded the project the 2014 Gold Design Award for Best Renovation Project. The project also received Learning By Design Magazine’s 2015 Outstanding Project award in the Remodel/Adaptive/Reuse/Restoration category.
